Hi all, this coin, for want of a better word, was among a lot of 3 uncleaned roman AE's purchased for $6 each, yeah I know... big spender!
It was very encrusted, like it had been in the sea..... I would call it toasted. Anyway. all efforts to clean it were futile, so as a final resort I tossed it in an ultrasonic bath which opened it up a little and it was now looking promising.
I read about heating a coin then quenching it. Nothing to lose really, so I heated the coin over a gas flame until the first sign of green flame appeared then quenched it in cold distilled water. Most of the encrusted surface broke away, then I spent a fair while cracking the remainder of the build-up off with a wide dental tool. The reverse (I'm guessing) is now showing a B left of centre, an A right of centre and a crossed device between them.
There are other devices and levels on it as well.
On the flip (Obverse I assume) side appears to be possibly a small central circle with 5 or 6 spiral arms, but also just as possibly it is only the pock marks of the corrosion the coin has endured.
It probably won't make it into my album, but it was a lot of fun and I thought I would share it here.
Sadly I didn't take a before shot, but here is the result. The colour difference is from the obverse taken with my digital camera under really sad lighting, and the reverse taken with my phone after the battery went flat in the camera
