I have an opportunity to buy six PCGS graded Morgans. All common dates. Five are cleaned and one polished. Four are graded AU and the other two XF. Question is, what would be a reasonable offer?

Less than melt if you want to make a dollar selling them again.

Cull circulated Morgans now sell for about double melt for stacking. The premiums for them have gone high like other 90% silver. My local coin store sells them for about $32-$35 each. To answer your question without seeing them, I wouldn't pay much above $40-$45 each since they are problem coins, slabbed or not. I could be wrong. Check sold listings on ebay, that should give you a good idea for prices.

OK to buy cleaned coins, but the price has to be advantageous to the buyer, with a much lower price. For me, such coins are best bought at junk silver prices, but they are usually available in MS-60 or lower.

Quote: Why do you want them? I was hoping to get them cheap, then turn then into at least a small profit to use towards something else. The seller unfortunately doesn't want to play.

Why would the seller " play" and sell them cheap ? Cleaned ExF AU Morgan's are currently bringing in The mid high 30s . The certification slabs ,add on an additional 2 to 4 bucks . Morgan and Peace dollars continue to bring silly money!

Buying Morgans at melt right now is just unrealistic. I suppose it's possible, especially if they're poor or fair, but even then I don't know. As others have stated, premiums on 90% silver are pretty high right now, around $10/oz over melt on halves and $8/oz over melt on dimes and quarters. If you can manage to buy Morgans under $30 then absolutely go for it, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that to happen any time soon with any regular frequency. And that's for common date AG-VG, so even a cleaned XF/AU is going to be more than that. Without seeing them, I would imagine that even $35 would not be a bad price to buy them at as of right now. That could change, but I would imagine that even in the best case scenario the premiums might drop in step with an increase on spot, but the actual coins would remain the same price as a result. I really don't think we're going to be seeing 90% selling at $25/oz again any time soon.

I do not usually offer an opinion on buying coins. However, if I were in your position I would buy one or maybe two "straight grade" coins instead of six "PROBLEMATIC" coins. Hold them for a while. If you do no want to hold coins and instead want to "flip" questionable coins then --- DO NOT BUY THEM...You are bound to be disappointed.

your advice is interesting. cull large cents jumped from $3 to $4 recently. that percentage increase isn't matched elsewhere in the series. for example youd be doing a lot better if you invested in culls than if you invested in mint state braided hair cents over the last 5 years. I'm not savvy to the Morgan dollar market but I believe cull morgans have greatly outperformed low MS ones recently on a percentage basis. quality coins and key dates are no more of a guarantee to appreciate than cull coins and common dates.
