When I go to the local grocery I often ask the Service Counter manager for any foreign coins, halves or Ikes that they have. Usually I end with a few golden dollars, an occasional Aruba or Mexican coin. Once in a while they have an Ike come thru.

I always buy whatever they have as it helps them so they remember me and save the weird stuff for me.

This week they said they had a whole bin of "Big dollars". She went to the office and brought back a bin with 73 Ikes. Of course I bought them and brought them home. When I got home I sorted thru them and for the most part they were typical nothings. Two however were not:

1976-S 40% silver
1977-S circulated Proof

I saved these and now have to figure out what to do with the rest... I usually CoinStar my chaff but they don't take Ikes.

Very good with the two examples that you have retained.
Send the rest back to a bank, for as many as they will take.

Alternatively, you could dispose of the rest on ebay as a job lot, but
due to their total weight, the shipping cost would be high.

Always nice to pick up a little silver at face value. Well done @n9. As for the rest, yes spending them can be fun.

The circulated proof makes you wonder about some people.

Very cool acquisition. Yes, spend them, or take them to your bank.

Outstanding!

You could always 'gift' them to Jbuck

My suggestion is to use them for tips or wait for the next coin show to spend them.

As a kid, I would have to come back again and again wearing as many different costume combinations as I could create!

I actually found a great place to use them! Our community has a Farmer's Market twice a month in the cooler months (desert SW USA) and several of the booth owners love it when I pay for my purchases in Ike's, halves or SBA's.

I usually grab a pocket full of them and use them there, some of the guys give them to their kids or grandkids or save them for themselves.

Make sure you check for varieties!

Super easy to spend these, your bank will take them as well.

I figured that he could take a drive and drop them (or sell them) into your stash of what-nots!

Seriously though..there are some great ideas here!

When I get some Ikes, I use them for tipping waitresses.
