I have been watching this seller on ebay for a few weeks and he appears genuine enough, but this is his 5th or 6th lot of these tiny gold coins, I have one of these or very very similar, myself from about 3 years ago and I have never been able to identify it. So any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

It's an Indian Fanam - very common

They are sometimes passed off a celtic gold by less honest dealers

Yep, it's not ancient, and not particularly pure gold, either, but it is apparently a genuine coin. This particular type has not been attributed to a particular place or ruler, but they would have been struck in southern India and Sri Lanka sometime in the period 1500-1700 AD. The BIN price that dealer is asking is a bit on the high side. You'll find them in the quarantine section of Zeno.

You'll also sometimes see these coins slipped into bulk lots of uncleaned ancient coins as "spice" - it's a cheap way for the less scrupulous sellers to obtain the much-coveted "WOW I FOUND GOLD!!" in their feedback.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

I had a super-common one that went for about 3 or 4 quid the other day (on the bay). Yes, tiny Indian Fanams, the most misunderstood little gold coins of all time. I originally bought mine as a 'Celtic coin' on the bay and was quite 'miffed' when I opened the packet and saw how tiny it was.

I am not sure we will even be humans by then but I am sure he will be rich by then when he inherits his Great x 11 Grandfather's collection.
