These coins are my first purchase. What do you think they will grade? I am sure the quarter probably won't grade very high. The morgan looks to be in the best condition. What do you think? If you don't mind, could you tell me what you see that makes it grade what you think it grades. I am trying to learn.

Hi,
All these coins are more common dates. The Peace dollar would grade at about EF 45 and the Morgan would grade about EF 45 - AU 50
This is a great forum to be on!

Morgan AU-58 (beautiful coin, lightly circulated but not cleaned IMHO)still has some mint luster and uncirculated details.
Peace EF-40 (circulated with strong dings and contact marks rev wing feathers worn)
WashQuart VG-8 (must have full rims to be F or better)

I'm only going to address the Morgan, 'cause they're what I like.

The obverse indicates an EF-low AU coin, if you look at the wear on the hair above the ear, the cotton bolls, and the leaves. However, the reverse tells a different story entirely. The eagle's breast and legs, the first places to wear, are still quite strong.

Here's the point: Morgans were minted by the millions. Dies wore at uneven rates, and were often switched out. Further, New Orleans isn't noted for particularly strong strikes. I'm thinking this coin is the result of a reverse die breaking or wearing out, and being replaced by a relatively fresh one paired with a worn obverse die.

I agree with atlashealth for that reason - this coin is no worse than AU55.

Thanks for the comments guys. What is the best way to protect this coin? Would it be worth it trying to get this coin certified? SuperDave would it be possible to identify the dies? Isn't that called VAMS or something like that? I may be totally off on what VAMS are, but that seems to be what it is.
