I am sure the quarter probably won't grade very high. The morgan looks to be in the best condition. What do you think? If you don't mind, could you tell me what you see that makes it grade what you think it grades. I am trying to learn. Report this Post to the Staff

The obverse indicates an EF-low AU coin, if you look at the wear on the hair above the ear, the cotton bolls, and the leaves. However, the reverse tells a different story entirely. The eagle's breast and legs, the first places to wear, are still quite strong. Here's the point: Morgans were minted by the millions. Dies wore at uneven rates, and were often switched out. Further, New Orleans isn't noted for particularly strong strikes. I'm thinking this coin is the result of a reverse die breaking or wearing out, and being replaced by a relatively fresh one paired with a worn obverse die. I agree with atlashealth for that reason - this coin is no worse than AU55. Report this Post to the Staff

Would it be worth it trying to get this coin certified? SuperDave would it be possible to identify the dies? Isn't that called VAMS or something like that?
