Your coin was dipping into some sort of acid solution that dissolved some of the copper core.

I agree with acid damage. We see a few of them every year.

Definitely not an error. I believe this is a very typical "Coca-Cola quarter". Drop a perfectly normal quarter into a glass of Coke, and wait for it to stop fizzing, and it will come out looking pretty much the same as this.

The copper core is more vulnerable to acid attack than the cupronickel cladding, which is how the "coin sandwich" effect was created. Acid attacking underneath the plating also explains the bubbles and blisters all over it.

Just a damaged quarter worth a quarter.

acid dipped quarter to etch the copper center, also the CuNi cladding is bulging out on the reverse, possibly to heat being applied - (I do not see a corresponding dent in the same area on the Obverse).

to the CCF and acid. Sap, have you put a quarter into coke? If it would dissolve copper, they wouldn't be able to sell it as a drink.
