Very common to see the Machine Doubling on larger denomination coins.

Note the affected areas are on the outside/inside edges of the devices. On a true Doubled Die, the spread will be seen on the centers of the devices. Not on the outside edges. Machine Doubling happens after the strike. The machine moves slightly and alters the fresh struck devices. On a doubled die, the hub doubling is on the die, thus every coin will show this spread. Machine Doubling can see seen on a doubled die, but Machine Doubling doesn't make it a doubled die. The doubling on a doubled die is on the die. (Not caused by the machine)
Note on my images above, where the contour was removed on the MD areas?
CoopHome: Why can a doubled die have Machine Doubling, but Machine Doubling can never Strike a doubled die? MD caused by the machine. doubled dies are created on the dies.
