I won an auction for this coin this weekend. It's not in hand yet, so posting pics from the page. Your opinions on it are appreciated. Thanks! Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

S-260. R-1. small date, large fraction.
its a VG in terms of detail my opinion. a bit more nicked up than average but not unpleasant.
i cant tell if its got pitting or if thats a photo/lighting issue. not a huge deal one way or the other but it does impact the price point.
there is something going on over the 0 in the date. I think its a nick/scratch.
solid coin.

F or better sharpness to my eye, but pitting and nicks detract.

Well, my thinking is more along the lines of VF+ish Sheldon... Not a bad looking coin overall to my eyes... PCGS photograde helps...

I see it as a DETAILS coin, (environmental pitting and scratches on the obverse).

And surely cleaned as well.

I think it makes VF for detail. Surfaces look porous from light corrosion, more so on the reverse. The raised dot above the date is a distraction and presumably is displaced metal from an impact or cut. Small hits on the portrait further hurt eye appeal.
Draped bust cents with strong detail and decent eye appeal aren't easy to find. Hopefully this one meets your expectations.

many of these early planchets had issues due to shipping from England in barrels. humidity and salt caused porous and corroded planchets. theres a good chance this coin was from one of those barrels. they struck pretty much every planchet as they were difficult to get. imo these early draped busts should take that into account when grading but its difficult if not impossible to determine in some cases if the surface issues were caused prior to or after minting.
i have this one at F12 Details (corroded)

I'm at F-15 details (cleaned, environmental damage).
