Looking through some of my wheat cents and came across this nice 1956 D. Look at the veins running through the head. They are in several places across the top of Mr. Lincoln. They sure don't look like circulation damage or scratches. Think I'll put this one in a 2 X 2.

to the CCF!

It's a Die Crack and Chip. The die used for the strike had cracked and a small area of metal had fallen out. When the coin was struck, the metal of the planchet was pushed into the gap. That's why the die chip stands above the surrounding metal.

When looking at the head with a 20 X eye lope, I can see a series of small "vein" like raised areas throughout head. Perhaps the crack splintered. Thanks again for your advice..

You can find a lot of die cracks on the 50s wheats. They ran some of the dies way too long. Check out this site. http://cuds-on-coins.com/
