It was a former Encased Cent. The mounting of them into the holder, damages the coin coin rim areas. Thus the removed coin is not a cull coin. Not a plus for the coin.

This is what they probably looked like before:

While the coin looks nice in the holder, when removed it is just a damaged coin. So the best thing to do is not remove it from the holder. At least there is interest in these. But removed, it is just a damaged coin. So in the wheat pile this coin will go.

CoopHome: "Encased Cents?" What are they? these in holders we 'Good Luck" coins. once removed, they are now just damaged coins, a cull

Looks like it has been sheared off and not just a hit. Someone playing on a paper cutter or shear. If it was an Encased Coin, it would be affected all the way around.

I don't think it was encased, that area on the reverse at k-1 looks like damage - notice how it is bulging out, making the coin out-of-round.

Post-strike damage, yes. Could have happened any number of ways. Suspect it wasn't encased, or not an attempt to encase it.
