This looks like a great example of gas bubbles from the Zn, Cu plating failure, environmental damage or is it all of the above?

Nice--the zinc core has become ZnO from expoosure as Mike Diamond noted. Look at how the copper plating has buckled. (ie damage)

Umm, that's a parking lot coin with subsequent rot from exposure.
