Dear coleagues,
Can you help me?
Do you believe this piece could be fake? I was suspicious because there are some lines connecting the letters to the edge on the obverse.
Thank you very much!

@prs, I'm suspicious too, but because of the softness to the details. I'm interested to see what others think.

Certainly looks like a cast fake.

I agree. Lines connecting letters can be a good thing - flow lines show a coin was struck - but on this coin everything is very soft and the surface is like it has been cast.

I don't know about this type but cheap Caracalla coins are not hard to find, so it's an odd coin to copy.

@prs, any chance of you adding a couple pictures of the edge? It would be nice to check for a parting line. Thx.

Edge shots are wicked hard to do because of the curvature meaning only a small portion is in focus. Thx for posting these.

I'm not seeing an obvious parting line though. Perhaps the edge was ground down and then distressed to simulate wear?

It looks like two halves to me? It's not easy to see if it is or isn't from photos. There's a line running roughly down the edge, which if so, seems to have been filed to try to hide it. On the left of the bottom photo, it looks like there's a gap. I don't think you'd get a hollow like that on the edge of a hammered coin.

'Pasty' surfaces, and mushy details, especially the reverse.
Could be silver plated, so XRF test may be of doubtful value.
I don't know it's a fake, but I share the OP's suspicions.

Looks cast to me....But then we're just working from photos.
The op has the coin in hand and has doubts so I just wouldn't have this in my collection....It isn't a rare coin and decent examples can be had for well under $80...

Interested how much the op paid and from where?..Can you get your money back?...I would...

Did you buy from a reputable dealer and if so could you post the photos that drew you to this coin?

According to wildwinds, it is ,,Caracalla, AE Limes denarius. Military mint.", it must be silver plated, that's why it looks like that. Just like this one

Not to be too forward, but this looks like an obvious cast fake to me, no need to see the edge of the coin really.
It does seem to have age to it but a copy it still remains.
Only my opinion but as a collector of roman coins, I would throw that in the trash.
