I think it's a error ad I'll keep mine till they say it is a error. I'm new to this only been doing it a year but I watched my dad do it for years. In fact, I don't know but I think this is one of the top 3 questions we get here. New members can't believe that this is a sanded coin, but it is. People do a lot of things to coins. As noted above, we see similar damage on a variety of coins posted to the forum. Coin collecting is a very personal thing. If you like the coin, keep it.
