I'd have to say MS details (ED).

i agree with the other guys. slab grade will be ms details. almost a knockout coin and still a very nice one. looks like finger prints a 5 and 10 on the obverse and some nasty stuff on the back. solid strike. slightly misaligned dies.

i cant tell from the pictures what you would find if that stuff on the back was removed. my guess is that there will be permanent spots/ breaks in the die bloom under the environmental damage. if I owned it I would remove the reverse spots regardless.

the 1853 cent has an absurd number of misaligned die coins. almost every variety from that year was known with MAD. before he passed my father was writing a book about what went wrong at the mint that year. he had hoarded more than 150 of the estimated 1000 MAD 1853 large cents. at some point I will get around to completing and publishing his work. after I finish up the book the hoard will probably be broken up.

There are areas on the obverse that appear to show wear: the area above LIBERTY, the denticles between the star and 1, and the hair & neck above the 3. The reverse does show green contaminates, but I am not seeing damage. I am at AU55, but on the fence if the contaminates will detail the coin. If you are looking for a problem free example, pass.

Together, the chance that it goes AU and the chance that it won't conserve properly outweigh anything but a very low price.

missed that, thanks CarrsCoins.

i was also concerned as to what would be under the veridgris. I think its going to go for under $100 and the only reason I was looking at it. looking at the highest points on the highest leaves I'm not seeing and sign of wear so I had it UNC details possibly MS62 if I was assigning a grade with the obverse areas more strike related.
