I'd be quick to call that 1897 AU as well. It exhibits a weaker strike than yours does, so tougher to judge high points, but sure looks lightly circulated to me.

Now we're cooking with gas folks!

Jaobler- That appearance in the left field doesn't automatically preclude a coin from MS.

I've seen countless Morgan dollars exhibit this same look.

TY- I commend you for transparency and venturing out!

That "62" is more like a 55-58 coin

after looking at the OP coin more I think it could be ms63. The eye/cheek area looked like wear at first but I can see this being ms63 the details are all there and sharp so ill change my quick guess grade of 55 to a ms63rb after actually taking the time to look at the coin. nice indian

took a longer look at this one. my original grade was AU58 or MS62

the strike is there on both sides
I'm not seeing any erroneous marks or scratches
the two areas I key on for wear on the reverse is the outline of the shield and the highest points of the middle area of the bow
on the obverse the tops of the letters on the headband and the ribbon(diamond) area. I am not seeing anything on these points to indicate circulation. looks like lighter obv strike. you are going to see what looks like wear on the high points of the feathers on MS coins so one cant just look at that

i think what holds this back on this one is the discoloration of the surfaces particularly on the profile and left field. for these reasons I think it holds the coin to MS62RB

heres an MS62 example that shows what I'm talking about

@panzaldi are those hits on the cheek ,neck, above the eye and field in front of the bust if so thats what would hold it from being higher grade IMO. all nice coins
