2017-Liberty-With-A-Mint-

First I apologize to the admins, I have a difficult time finding the right forum to post in. I'll grow into it.

I know buying mint issued Bullion coins is close to a losing proposition. But this one I've had since 2017 (and since the mint just released them again with a 1/10 same design but free, I'm guessing these particular ones aren't over the top popular.)

The odd smudge at the neck what caused it and why? The nearest I've been able to discern is some piece of trash floated into the room and corroded the coin.

The second photo was taken 11/4/22 It appears the corrosion is spreading.

This particular coin may have been subject of the single largest packaging the mint has ever used. Why? And do I need to keep this coin in all that packaging?

Any other observations are welcome I have bought other Eagles. I guess I'm believing all those ads touting bullion.

Fascinating, yes. That 2017 (not 1917) picked up an environmentally active agent which is interacting with the coin's surface--introduced at the mint if the coin remained in its mint packaging. Any chance of getting a closer-in pic of the feature in question under diffused lighting?

Here is my 2¢ . Looks like maybe an oily substance of some kind. I kinda like it and wonder what it will turn into over the years. Make sure to store it the same way you have been, that might have a bearing on what it turns into.

Thanks for the information. When it Picks up contamination at the mint, does that decrease the value? This particular smudge seems to be changing over time. The original was almost all red, thats the clearer pic, the later one has turned mostly black, and seems to have spread.

Unfortunately, I don't know how I would create a "Diffuse light" photo. I may or may not have the proper equipment. Those photos were made with my phone.
