So I bought this coin 2 years ago - already slabbed in an old blue PCGS Label.
The label just shows the date denomination and the grade. But I decided to enter it into my PCGS Set Profile, I found out that this is a variety of a 1939 with the reverse of a 1938. A nice surprise for me..

ya , I'm not sure - but PCGS has it listed as a variety. So I'll have to research that one out I guess.

All 1939 Proofs are either Reverse of 1938 or Reverse of 1940, with the 1940 variety being the somewhat more desirable version.

Still, a very nice coin and a great addition to any collection.

I just noticed this thread Dearborn, somehow overlooked it. Was not familiar with it and was curious about it. Do you or HGK3, know if the pic and link I've provided are what this is referring too, basically, the difference in the steps? I've just always liked transitional varieties, think they are cool. Maybe a closeup of the steps? LINK http://www.varietyvista.com/04a%20J...arieties.htm

The 1939 for me it is the bigger transitional year for Nickels. 6 different varieties. I have no Idea about series 20 or what the PCGS say by Die 2.

I am no expert on the subject by any means. However, my understanding is that the "wavy steps" versus "straight steps" distinction is the difference between the 1938 RDV (wavy) and the 1940 RDV (straight).

There is no distinctly 1939 reverse, as all 1939 coins were minted with either the 1938 reverse or the 1940 reverse with the majority using the 1940 design.

What's interesting, though is that there are apparently some 1940 proof coins that have the 1938 RDV, at least according the CPG. My guess is that there were still some proof dies of the 1938 reverse left over in 1940. Who knows?
