2000 Virginia State Quarter Overstruck With 2000 Cent PCGS MS-66

Yokozuna Pillar of the Community United States 4618 Posts	Posted 11/05/2022 11:42 pm Here's another "Mint Fiction" as I like to think of them, from the Philadelphia mint. This 2000(P) Virginia State Quarter was struck normally and was then Overstruck with a pair of 2000(P) Lincoln Memorial cent dies. I'm almost 100% sure that this was done intentionally by a mint employee, but there is the slightest of chances it was struck and then somehow returned to a press for the Lincoln Cent and overstruck. They were Sac Dollars and ST Quarters overstruck by Cent Dies. Fred Weinberg handled some. Dearborn Moderator United States 97586 Posts	Posted 11/06/2022 4:34 pm I'm willing to bet that a Mint employee took that dollar coin and placed it in the cent striking chamber and had the machine strike the cent over the dollar. I noticed that the obverse and the reverse of the 'cent' have the correct orientation to strike normal cent coins. Collecting since 1972. Learning from then on "Tell me and I forget. I know that I'll never have a coin like one of these, but I'm fascinated by them! I've been collecting errors and varieties for 50 years now. My greatest find was one of the Cheerios Dollars back in 2000. I searched all year and ate LOTS of cereal while doing so. I never thought of it being worth more than maybe $100 or so, just because of the 'Mint' Certificate of Authenticity on the package. I had the coin for 13 years before hearing about the prototype reverse. Somehow, I feel that that will always be my greatest find.
