Let me first start by saying I am not that knowledgeable on Spanish coins. I do however have about 50 or so Philip II blancas that I would like to identify. The coins I have are all about 15mm and 1.0g. Are these coins also referred to as cornados mistakenly or otherwise? From the information that I have found, it seems that the conversion between blancas and cornados and possibly between those units and maravedis changed over the years. It all seems incredibly confusing and inconsistent at first glance, but maybe that's just me!

I have also come across a few different examples of various mints, but I haven't found a single source that lists or shows all of the various mint marks. Does anyone know where I can find such information? Also, I noticed that the castle design varies, is that dependent on the mint or did individual mints use different castle designs as well? It also looks like the monogram varies a bit too.

Basically, I'm looking for either a source on information specifically on these blancas, Philip II, or Spanish coins in general that would have everything I need to help identify these coins. Where should I start?

Thanks!

@chi, my go to reference on medieval Spain is Cayon & Castan, "Las monedas Espaņolas desde Don Pelayo a Juan Carlos. I anos 718 A 1979."

I don't recall this book being too difficult to purchase, so if you want to post a coin or two for me to chase down for you in the meanwhile, I'd be happy to give it a go.

Okay, that sounds great! I'll definitely try to find that book. In the meantime, I want to try to sort these out the best I can to where all the duplicates are together. It looks like there are sometimes marks to the left and right of the monogram and again on either side of the castle. Is the placement of those marks consistent such that the mark to the left of either is always a mint mark and the mark to the right is the designer?
