When I first started searching nickels, I read that people kept pre-1960 nickels. So, I did that too without really thinking about it.
I've filled all but 6 or 7 holes in my album. In the mean time I gathered maybe 700 non-silver, pre-1960 nickels - all from circulation.
But now what? They seem like they are just taking up space. Should I just dump them back into circulation? Is there something better to do with them?

I just throw all of mine in a big soda bottle bank, for the grandkids. Probably not the answer your looking for. Guess it all depends on if you want to keep them or use them to upgrade your collection by dumping them and picking up a few coins you need.

I was in a similar situation a few years ago. After filling holes with the very best examples, I rolled the rest and took them to the bank.

If they're average circulated and not scarce, spend 'em.

Well I have never stopped saving pre 1960 Jefferson nickels since 1963 . To our present date and still saving them . Why ? , I guess way back then I thought they would be sort after some day . Roll them and dump them at your bank .Or put them on e-Bay by the mixed date& mint rolls or by entire hoard . There are plenty of newbies that will gobble them up at a price .

I had several thousand of them by time I finally complete my Jefferson CRH set from bank rolls. I separated out the 'good' ones and returned the rest to the bank.
FWIW - the 'good' ones I kept were the nine Jefferson with annual mintage below 10 million, all of the War silver and any Buffalo.

I have kept every nickel over the past decade or so, but the accumulation has almost stopped growing the past two years. It is hardly a hoard by most standards because the last decade has seen me shifting hard to cashless transactions. My goal is to find a YN among my local "friends and family" who might want to look through them. This probably goes for the pre-1982 cents I have kept over the same time, although I kept those primarily to escape the melt.

Thanks all for the feedback. I'm going to pull out the obviously damaged ones and toss them into circulation. If there's enough of the others, I'll probably just post the lot on ebay with a small markup over face value to cover the hassle. Wish I knew someone local who might be interested in them. In the future, I'm not going to keep anything without a specific reason for doing so.

If you had enough posts under your belt, I would have taken any of your no problem Nickels at a small price .
