Stopped a garage sale today and picked up a small box of coins for 50.00 which had 2.50 in silver quarters, 1.70 in silver Roosevelt dimes, .40 in Mercury dimes quite a few wheat cents and some oddball class. In the mix of it all I found this also a 1851 P Half Dime both in EF 40 plus condition. Question is, is it worth getting graded and slabbed? If so PCGS or NGC? Let me have your thoughts on this one. I'll do a separate post on the Half Dime.

Capt, what a score! That's a really fine 3 cent nickel. Often I've heard it said that slabbing is counterproductive for coins valued less than $150 due to all of the various costs involved (they add up!). But it all depends on your intentions with this beauty.

Super example but not worth grading, I'm guessing.

Thanks for the advise on getting it graded. I will ponder sending it in to weigh the pros and cons on my end.

Great find for sure! I would agree with your XF40 assessment on this one. That said, this would need to be a mid to high AU coin for me to justify grading fees. At this grade you won't break even, even with next to nothing invested in it. Nice score nonetheless

It's a nice coin and great find, value ~$65. Submission is expensive with standard grading cost plus postage and insurance both ways. So... no. I like the preservation aspect but that is up to you.
