Saw this one on ebay a few days ago and it just sold for $950. Thought it was an interesting coin but I couldn't justify the price as it was the 2nd most expensive contemporary counterfeit I have seen (the first being an 1811 LVO from the last Briggs and Bustos auction at around $1350). I could only find one other contemporary counterfeit Sombrerete on acsearch.info. Thought you all would find it interesting.

Zero to less than zero chance that is NOT a modern concoction!!

He just forgot to insert the usual language that most of these types of fakes... from these types of sellers come with - "coin for estudiar", "is no silver", etc. I assume most originate from Mexico itself.

This seller just today listed this garbage... which needs no explanation:

Thanks realeswatcher. It seems like in this case this Sombrerete coin is more likely to be modern because the seller is pushing other fake coins, or do you see other indicators? I do remember seeing a seller with some very dubious 1812 Oaxaca struck silver 8 reales a while back (this kind - https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide...duid-1426538 ). I thought it might be the same guy but it was over 3 months ago so I couldn't check.

This coin reminds me of that 1816 MoJJ counterfeit that comes up often where the dies are crudely engraved but swamperbob has noted modern elements in XRF testing.
