Interesting article elevates Sponsian the First to Emperor status based on evidence from coins

Very interesting article. Now are there any authentic King Arthur and the round table coins out there?

Already discussed here, though with a different article link: http://goccf.com/t/435477

TL/DR: it certainly sounds like there was a guy named Sponsian somehow involved with those coins, probably back in 3rd century AD, but evidence for which role he might have had is lacking.

That he was a military commander is very plausible, and that coins needed to be minted is also plausible, but to
call him an 'Emperor', is perhaps a bridge too far, considering the economic and military situation that surrounded him.

As far as the coin itself is concerned, it is easy enough to include 'IMP' in the lettering to give the local commander in this sort of situation some recognition to help legitimize his local authority.

Henry Cohen dismissed this coin on stylistic grounds, and I can understand why.

Much more recent research has added some legitimacy to it being genuine, but IMHO, I think there will always be some doubt about it, as Sap has implied in another thread.

Perhaps 'Sponsian the Questionable' might be more appropriate.
