Hey everybody, I'm new here but I'm an avid coin collector of various type of coins. I have a 1973 S. mint clad proof Kennedy half dollar that weighs 11.71 grams. Just wondering if this weight is part of the normal Weight Tolerance for these coins. Would love to hear some replies about this coin.
1971 to present Kennedy half dollars which are clad should weigh 11.34g and the chart below shows a tolerance of + or - .26g, so it may be slightly over the 11.6g weight. In 1971 all silver was eliminated from the half dollar and replaced with a copper-nickel alloy (clad). However, a different source I have lists the tolerance for the 1973 at 0.454g which would make it within tolerance if that is accurate vs the chart. 1964: 0.259 grams, 1965-1970: 0.400 g, 1971-Date: 0.454 g 1976 Silver Collector Coins: 0.400 g, 1992-Date Silver Proof: 0.400 g
You are welcome otherwise to upload photos including front, back, and edge as there is always possibilities for rare findings on wrong planchets such as a older silver planchet or plated which adds to weight, but looks like its just within normal fluctuating tolerance levels most likely. For example, a 1971D and 1977D Minted on silver blank by mistake 11.5g for silver, 11.34g for non silver verified by a third party grader ANACS using a different method called specific gravity which are different between the older silver planchets and the later clad ones. https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-c...-silver.html
The DATA is right. The chart it is just informative. Different years, different sub counteractants, and also different technology change the admitted values of the chart.
