Heritage Auctions - Kevin Flynn is a prominent figure in the numismatic community, particularly known for his extensive research and publications on U.S. coin die varieties. A coin die variety expert and author, Flynn has contributed significantly to the field through his detailed studies and numerous books. His work focuses on identifying and cataloging variations in coin dies that lead to noticeable differences in the coins struck by those dies. These variations can include double dies, repunched mintmarks, overdates, and other anomalies that occur during the minting process.

Heritage is privileged to be able to offer The Kevin Flynn Collection of Die Varieties as a part of our March 4 Showcase auction. While most offerings of coin die varieties tend to focus on older (pre-1840) coins and Silver Dollars, this auction focuses on the lesser-known, but still quite collectible, varieties from later periods... with a nice helping of Morgans mixed in. Each coin in this auction is linked to one or more of Mr. Flynn's reference works. This auction is open for bidding now exclusively at Coins.HA.com, with the live session scheduled to begin Monday, March 4 at 5PM CT.

One particularly intriguing coin offered here is a 1968 cent, with doubled dies on both obverse and reverse. Graded PR67 Red by ANACS, this is a very nice proof doubled die reverse that has received very little publicity. That may be the reason that so few have been reported since the initial listing of this variety in the 1996 edition of The Authoritative Reference on Lincoln Cents. It is one more very nice proof variety with that deliciously low proof mintage. The doubling is particularly noticeable on the lettering at the top of the reverse.

Coins like these exemplify the die varieties to be found in this auction:

1857 1C Flying Eagle Cent, Multi-Denomination Clash, FS-901, Snow-8, MS62 PCGS
1865 3CN Repunched Date, RPD-001, PR61 ANACS. Plate Coin.
1913 5C Type Two, Doubled Die Obverse, DDO-001, FS-1101, MS65 NGC.
1892-O 25C Doubled Die Obverse, FS-101, MS63 PCGS (Housed in a PCGS Regency Holder)
1877 T$1 Doubled Die Obverse, DDO-001, Double Die Reverse, DDR-001, FS-101, MS62 ANACS.
1884-O $1 Misplaced Date, MPD-002, MS65 Prooflike ANACS.
1847 $5 Misplaced Date, MPD-2, FS-301, AU55 NGC.
1873 1C Indian Cent, Doubled Die, Type-Two, FS-102, Snow-2, MS64 Red and Brown PCGS.

Wow, that 1892-O MS63 plate coin is up to $3840. Price guide is $775. They must be after the "Regency Holder."
