This might be the most trivial topic ever. The beer store is one of the few places where I use cash. There's a new guy working there. The last two times I was there, the change from the purchase was six cents. The first time, the guy asked if I wanted the change, and I said yes. Yesterday, the guy didn't even ask, he didn't give me the change and acted like transaction done. Six cents is not worth bothering about, but nevertheless I found it irritating. What would you do?

Give him 6 cents LESS than the actual price and see if HE complains!

Never had that happen to me but.... I'd extend my open hand & not leave til it was in my palm. Never know when the stars will align & that 3 legged Buffalo & '92 CAM will be given back in change.

I have had random restaurant servers do this for years. They just bring back the bills. Normally I tip at least 20%. But if a server keeps my coins, then I automatically cut them to 15% and deduct $1. If they want to take a fraction of my dollar, then it's fair to take a fraction of their dollar.
I can also guarantee that they don't leave that loose change in the till. If they did that, the cash register wouldn't balance correctly at the end of the night. Bars and restaurants hate that. Those coins go straight into the tip jar or the server's pocket.

Quote: What would you do? I would ask for my change. It may only be a few cents but if they do that to every customer, over time that's a lot of "extra" money going into someone's pocket. If they put up a stink, ask for the manager. Also, what would be the legality of that? John1

Definitely ask for change. I'd be curious as to what he replies - let us know if it happens again.

Thanks for all the opinions. If it happens again, I'll ask for exact change. It's possible that the math is too much for him. He doesn't appear to be the sharpest tool in the shed and I'm not sure if their system allows them to enter the amount tendered to calculate the change for them automatically like most other places. I'll pay attention to that next time. I've gotten friendly with the owners and I know they've had problems retaining employees over the past couple years, so I don't want to make a big stink about it.
Edit to remove something I'm not sure about.
Echoing coin_rejector's comment, I do like to check the change to see if there's anything interesting. So that's part of the irritation. Recently I got a 1982-P copper large date - not worth anything, but entertaining to ID it.

The whole idea of not offering change on a retail transaction is just contrary to common business practice, not to mention the law.

I don't think it's petty at all. Back when I was still drinking, We used to go to a bar/restaurant called The Greentree Inn at least 3 times a week. Suddenly they wanted to not have pennies in the till so they rounded UP to the next nickel. Even if it was only 1¢ they went UP.
I said something the first time. I told them you're doing it for YOUR convenience.... so round it DOWN. He said no. Never went back. About 2 months later the owner reached out to see if I was ok..... I said fine, don't spend all those pennies in one place.

Quote: don't spend all those pennies in one place You reminded me that at the other liquor store a mile closer to my house, suddenly everything was priced so that with sales tax the total was in even dollars. Took me a couple visits buying different things to realize that it wasn't just coincidence. You know they weren't rounding down. This was 5-10 years ago and I never went back. Gouging people is never good for business in the long term.

That is completely bizarre. I get it if the change was .96 and he just gave you a dollar, but SHORTING you change is extremely strange. And, as mentioned, illegal.

A local deli had the same desire to eliminate pennies and small change, so they starting rounding everything down, sometimes to the closest dollar if it saved you a dime. They knew they were still coming out ahead when compared to credit card sales.

I pay cash for gas at the local Arco gas stations. I've been shorted a few cents at least once and have never said anything. But, at least two times they've rounded up with once being about 11 cents. So I believe I am in the green! Quote: I told them you're doing it for YOUR convenience.... so round it DOWN. He said no. Never went back. The coin business can be as fragile as this. Because the circles of professional dealers is smaller than perceived, getting a bad reputation would deny you lots of business quickly. So treat your dealers and collectors with the most respect!
