It looks like they are soldered to the plate.

A salesman's sample piece to show his company's available Lincoln medal options?

Two things about this trio intrigue me.

First, the depiction of Lincoln with what looks like an 18th century pigtail (as Washington wore).

Second, the annotation incorporated into one specimen, "TREAS. DEPT. 1869" which I'd take as being possibly a property mark.

Perhaps these are prototypes of a medal that the U.S. Mint was considering striking?

I've been told they are soldered in what might be what the planchets were cut from.

I sold this to Paul Cunningham at the FUN show for $475 and he gave me an autographed copy of his book on Lincoln exonumia.
