My aunt is letting me post these on her name but my pops gave me this oin and told me it was going to pay for my first car but I'm like nope but whatever. So I snuck it from my dad's file box and I got some pictures here but I can't get a better close up on the cut side. Will this actually be worth anything but the actual quarter it is?

Not to burst your bubble but,if legit, it would not even pay for a hot wheel's toy car
We might need in focus pics to really confirm.

thats a manufacturing error called a mint clip. it is an error in the blank cutting part of production. I agree with john1 that it wont be buying anyone a car. I dont handle much of the modern stuff but I bet it would sell for something like $5-15. check out ebay and look at the sold items to see what similar coins have been selling for.

pretty cool coin and an amazing find if it came from circulation.

@ken, that does look like a legit clip to me too. There is a little Blakesley Effect visible on the obv and rev rims.

Added: for sure worth saving in a 2x2.

It would be called an incomplete planchet.

Not a die issue, but during the cutting of the blanks. The stock metal was reinserted and this blanks cut was over a previous cutting.

This removed part of the metal on the blanks. Creating a "curved clip" blank.

When the blank was run though the setup process, the missing area left a weakness 180 degrees from the curved clip blank, and the Planchet then was showing the double curved clip (from two different stock metal events) and now the weakness call a Blakesley affect is seen on the planchet. (also seen on the coin as well)
Note on this clip that two different events happened that left two clips on top of each other on this coin. What two events? A previous insertion of the stock material, was moved and second cut was introduced, leaving to cut blanks affected differently. (this is the second blank that was cut)

(A very rare clipped planchet)

When the coin was struck it was a normal coin process, but because of the blank/planchet events, the coin is now a "Curved Clipped" Cent.

The issue was during the blank creation and passed on to the planchet event, when struck created a coin with a mint error. (blank/planchet issue not a clip by dies)

Single Curved Clips:

There are other examples of these with the normal Double clipped planchets:
Double Curved Clip Coins:

Triple clip planchets,
Off center: (Not struck in the collar, thus no reeds on the edge of the coin)
Die-Cut-Or-Just-Damaged?-1990-P-Quarter
Die-Cut-Or-Just-Damaged?-1990-P-Quarter

Struck Triple curved Clips:

Die-Cut-Or-Just-Damaged?-1990-P-Quarter

Straight clip planchets,

These happen when the clip is not aligned correctly and the edge is attempted to be cut, but no metal was over that area.

Die-Cut-Or-Just-Damaged?-1990-P-Quarter
Die-Cut-Or-Just-Damaged?-1990-P-Quarter

So there are different planchet cutting events, Straight, Curved, Single, Double, and Triple cutting events. These are caused in the blanks creation. Not an issue with the die cutting the coin.

CoopHome: What causes a clipped planchet issue? blanks not created correctly. blakesley affect seen on one or both sides of the coins. single, double, triple clips
