Good day CCF friends. I recently made the post of my 1995 DDO from crh'ing. I also had purchased the day before, 100% pure acetone as I had never bothered to bath my coins before. I put my coin in a clean glass jar, covered, rotated, for 3 days as it had sticky gunk on it with a touch of loose zinc debris. I also tried the bath with 6 other coins separately, in a clean jar, fresh acetone. The acetone did not do a thing, except perhaps seal future zinc leaching. I do not scrub, scratch or use any other technique except a water rinse all these years, this also includes my detecting coins. I've read all the acetone threads, suggestions and have experimented, with zero results. I would rather not use verdicare or any other chemical component. I would like to preserve my DDO'S and get the gunk off. Any assistance would greatly be appreciated as I am a tad frustrated. Thank you so much. ~Charlie

Acetone only removes problems on the surface. It will not remove stains as they are permanent on the coin. So they are not able to be removed. Diffing with other solutions is harmful as it removes the outer layer of the metal. Thus the original surface is removed. Leaving the coin with a doctored look. Best to worry only to remove just outer contamination that can be affected by acetone. To go deeper, ruins the value of the coin even lower than it was before. So best to use less concern on looks of the coins you have, and consider upgrading to a better coin to replace it. Using something too strong can reduce the value for a premium coin if done wrong, could loose 90% of the value, then it you had left it alone. (In a sense, you could be thinking about you body: I don't like my nose. And decide to cut it off. The end result would be worse than the benefit you really wanted) So doing the wrong thing to a coin is something to be avoided.

Acetone is not a wonder chemical, it has a slight effect when a slight effect is need.

Thank you very much coop and merclover. This is why I never bathed or cleaned my coins. I'm just surprised the acetone didn't even take off the glue. Best to do what I've always done... nothing except a 2x2.

Each batch of acetone has a limit, which is why tougher problems require a more frequent refresh. Here is an example of something that required a year to remedy. As with anything, the payoff should be more than the effort unless you really enjoy the process.

The glue might be water based, acetone will not remove water based anything. I soak clear glue in water first, then acetone.
