I picked this up in Madrid over the summer and am just now getting to deciphering all the counterstamps. It was sold with the description of 8 Maravedis or "Ochavo". It weighs 6.9 g and is roughly 23 mm x 25 mm.

I believe that there are three counterstamps on one side and a fourth on the other side, but I am unsure of the base coin. In addition to being heavily worn, I suspect that it was trimmed from round to its current octagonal shape. For the counterstamps, one is the number 8 in Roman Numerals plus the letter G. I believe that is from Phillip IV's reign and was applied in conjunction with the 1652 counterstamp on the other side.

However, I am less sure of the timing of that other "8" counterstamp and that last, mostly obscured counterstamp that might end in the letters "IL".

Any thoughts, whether additions or corrections? Thx.

Yes that is a great point and I should have mentioned something about that in my original post. It is my understanding that the shape of the number 5 on these counterstamps looks a lot like a modern number 9. Here is a numista link to a similar piece:

Bumping this thread just in case one of our experts in Spanish numismatics would like to weigh in on the base coin, counterstamps, or anything else. Thx.
