This is just for feedback and discussion. This coin was listed on auction (I am neither the seller nor the buyer.) 1903 Indian Head cent, pretty amazing toning. How would you grade this coin? (if you saw the auction, please don't spoil it!) Despite the grade, it probably got questionable color from PCGS.

PCGS has a tendency to give a straight grade to Proof Indian cents with neon color. My guess is that PCGS graded it PF65/66. I would not buy this coin straight graded in a PCGS holder because of questionable color. The blue color on copper opens up a debate on natural toning. On the obverse the coin has purple on one side and blue on the other, so what environment did the coin sit in to get toned this way naturally? The typical environments that coins get similar toning on both sides are from paper, cloth, and leather.

I'll guess PF-66BN. Probably a dark coin in hand.

Didn't get a lot of responses on this one but PCGS graded it Unc Details - Questionable Color.
The question in my mind was if it's a proof or not, and also, if it's original toning or AT.

It is an attractive coin. Guessing that the color on the coin was marked AT because the magenta tones looks mottled and scattered around both sides of the coin on the blue tones rather than showing a progression of color changing in bands or rings. Looking at the obverse rim and dentils from K4-K6 I would say MS but the coin looks superbly struck.

I thought about purchasing this and resubmitting it but passed on it because the bids were more than the risk I was willing to accept if it bodybagged.
