Hello. This 1863 Civil War token has a mark above the date, it looks like an H. I've tried to marry it with examples on line but have come up empty. Has anyone seen this version of the 1863 Not One Cent?

This one seems to have an H above the date, but is very different in other ways. I'm not registered with Worthpoint, so can't see the reverse. But other "JGW" tokens have those initials on the reverse.

That looks to be it. What does the JGW stand for?

Hmmm. Seems like you have enough info to find out and tell us more about your coin.

These initials stand for J.G. Wilson, a NY City diesinker/engraver. The "H" marked a die by Horter, a contemporary NY City diesinker. These tradesmen among others were known to collaborate and exchange dies.

There's a great book penned by Dave Bowers, called Engravers, Minters & Distributors of Civil War Tokens. If one is a member of the Civil War Token Society, this and other subject-related books can be purchased for a very low price! This perk makes joining well worth the membership fee, not to mention receiving quarterly journals and other benefits.

Exoguy, thanks for the info! I've been contemplating joining the Civil War Token Society, as the savings on books alone more than makes up for their low membership fee.
