here is a fun coin. purchased from Doug Bird in 2004. this variety has a mess of a reverse die. its cracked and swollen all over the place. bold double strike visible around 9:00 on both sides. S-199 R-4

I don't know what the coining equipment was like but it's interesting how deformed the coin is from the double strike.

it was a screw press with an open collar. there was a mechanical feed and ejection mechanism. an upsetting mill was used to put a rim on the blank before it was struck.
i think this coin may have a small clip that is adding to the funny shape. the thing I am seeing is the bit near the bust tip around 5:00. the rim is weak and its slightly indented.

That's a humdinger of a coin! Very nice. Smooth, even wear, nice surfaces. Wonder how it managed to stay in circ that long before it got put aside at some point and kept safe for Doug and others to enjoy.

thanks! I'm also impressed with how choice it is. most 1800s are ugly coins. Dougs eye for quality was impressive.

When Bob Grellman and Larry Goldberg both gush about how choice your copper is, you're probably doing okay, even if you do consider it "low grade." :P
I wouldn't ordinarily bust out a C-note + another 25 on top just for an auction catalog, money that can be used to put copper in my box, but that catalog would probably have been one of the rare exceptions. Thinking about that sale is what had me thinking about Chain cents, even ones that grade less than $30,000.

Quote: i think this coin may have a small clip that is adding to the funny shape. What I'm seeing is two overlapping circles roughly aligned with the visible denticles from the two strikes. The dent at 4:00 obverse and 2:00 reverse is where the two circles overlap. Sort of like this:

@paralyse - I have that catalog. its pretty awesome. that one, the Robinson Brown II and the Dan Holmes are just amazing in terms of cataloging skill and coin quality.
@kbbpll - that sure does make a lot of sense. thanks for taking the time to mark that up!

Check if you think it might be triple struck, especially the reverse. The E in United, and whatever that defect is above where the first S in States should be, look tripled to me now. Interesting coin.

interesting. ill take a closer look at it and report back.
the defect above the fist S in States is a die crack. my first thought about that tripled looking bit there is that it might be the edge of the T from the first strike making the second strike look strange. ill look at it closer and try and get some better images of those spots.

@kbbpll - I think you may be right that it was triple stuck. the leaves under the second S in stateS and the O in Of show doubling thats just slightly displaced. ill continue to look at and ponder this one.

I noticed it primarily in the E in States United and the circled set of leaves. There is a large offset between two strikes and then a smaller offset from a third. The way it looks to me at least. In other places maybe the larger offset got obliterated by the subsequent strike(s). Edit: oops
