I've post images of this coin before. After looking at it much closer and processing the photo in B&W with high contrast I discovered some additional issues that raised a couple questions about the location, consistency and purpose of the polishing.

Two areas on the reverse the die were aggressively polished and remain raised, not incuse. My assumption is there was a significant issue with the die. Not sure what the issue was but it doesn't look like a standard die clash polishing. The areas clashed are at the back of Lincoln's head and the date, (shouldn't be a mint mark).

Take a look and let me know what you think.

Your feedback is appreciated.

Agree, this is a tough one. I understand the lack of commentary from all but the sharpest cent hounds.

I have seen a lot of extremely abraded 88 coins, which has led me to believe they had some major issues with the dies this particular year and more than likely, from clashes. There were also some type I counter clashed known for this year/mm, yours may not be listed. There is very visible clashing in bay 4, which is seen in some of the type I counter clashes. If you are eluding to a mm that has been polished off or a change in the obverse die, I am not seeing it but there is much going on here, LOTS of abrading and possible Pareidolia on your part. You would really need to point out and possibly even outline what you are seeing here....

Hey Makecents, No, I don't believe there is a MM. But in the area where there should be a clash of the 1988 date there is something else. Just wondering if the experts have seen examples of unusual clashes. Thanks for looking MC.

Definitely evidence of a clash between columns 8,9,10 with a nice outline of Abes chin. This clash is fairly common to see though. The polish lines are excessive but not unusual for the 80's cents.

I agree with CoinHi - that is a very nice example of a clash between the columns - you can easily see the bottom of the chin/beard, neck line, and bow tie.

Gotcha. In the date area, there have been known Radical Mad Die Clashes, were the rim clashed close to the date but none none for this year. Here is a link. http://www.maddieclashes.com/radica...s-u-s-coins/

Below is a pic from Mad Die Clashes and yours, as what I was referring too. Yours may have been a Type I Counter Clash, with dual clashing, in bay 4.

My coin is has really passed it prime. Not sure I'll ever know what that is.
Many thanks MakeSense, Dearborn and CoinHI. Really appreciate you taking a look.
