Hi, folks. I have not been on here in a few years. I was given about $20 worth of pennies to go through for varieties and errors. I came across a 1990 Lincoln Cent that has a faint "L" in liberty. I took a picture (image A). Do you think this is something that occurred at minting or in circulation. While taking an image of the date I noticed what appears to be a faint doubling on Liberty (image B). Are my old eyes playing tricks on me?
Thanks,
Chris

The faint L is the result of post mint damage most likely. Not seeing a DDO.. please always show us both sides of your coin. Thanks. .

DDD Showing on devices towards the rim direction.
Die polishing to remove Ridge Ring, (stage 3).

All die events. Not a doubled die, but a normal die coin with polishing and Die wear issue on a zinc cent.
In order to be a doubled die coin, it has to be struck with a doubled die. This is not one of them. Just die wear and die polishing events on a normal aging die coin.

Hello,
I'm no expert with double die's (aka hub doubling of which there are eight or nine different classes or types). Visit CONECA dot com for more info. related to all things Doubling - Galvono to reducing lathe, to master hub, to master dies, etc.. Split serifs, doubling spread, direction clockwise, counter clockwise.

I believe you coin is an example of Machine Doubling ( Machine Doubling damage).
As for the 'L' in LIBERTY, it isn't die erosion - possible Grease Filled Die.

Note the black box on #3. That has really happened to the die, the reduced the size of those devices. Grease Fill makes the devices shorter and wider. That die event caused what we are seeing on the OP's coin.
