I think someone may have recently started using their mint Illinois State Quarters!

The other day in my coffee change I scored one 2022, one 2021, and this 2003 quarter. Something didn't look right when the oldest coin was nicer than the newest ones!

Almost twenty years since that quarter was minted. I bet you are right that this has been squirreled away for most of that time.

Cool find in pocket change Nells250. Despite the US Mint manufacturing the 50 State Quarters by the hundreds of millions of coins, the Statehood Quarters is one of the most collected coin series in U.S. coin history. It has been over ten years since the last Fifty State Quarter has been produced. Since that time, many people have decided to liquidate their collection of Fifty State Quarters so I'm not surprised to find or see you find some high grade examples now. Therefore, the supply of available quarters is now exceeding the demand. Also even in mint state values even graded remain from 50 cents to 22 bucks for that specific coin with only a very rare MS68 being worth 325 dollars. https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide...quarters/88/ in the long run, the prices will go up. However, if the number of coin collectors collecting the Fifty State Quarters decreases, the bottom will fall out of the market and prices will fall dramatically. If all those collectors also have really squirreled away some quantity of State Quarters and the economy goes sour, the vast majority of those people are going to suddenly flood our economy with all those $10 rolls of quarters. The demand for coins will further be reduced by all the dollar coins and other assorted spare change that folks have lying around the house returning to circulation. But from a collector standpoint they are easy to get into, easy still to locate for the most part and offer a great place to start collecting without breaking the bank unless you collect top pop which isn't recommended to buy modern top pop for investment since more likely come out in the future with that or better grades since so many are out there and put away.

I'm with you there. I still get a thrill finding those quarters as if just struck. I've noticed that over the past year or two, many more seem to be turning up. Pandemic related? I think so.

Yes. It is also why 2009 tend to be difficult to find. The Fed had enough coins in the system, so they did not order as much from the Mint which made production lower that year.
