I was just wondering what you guys think this coin grades. As you can see someone has graded it before but I'm checking the accuracy of their grade. The coin was graded some 30 years ago. I know that it is not ideal to scan coin in 2x2 holder but I really dont want to take it out of the original holder it was in when my dad purchased it in about 1977. Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

It would be impossible to grade from those scans. Maybe you get something better with a camera?

And I hate to bring up the issue of knowing it is authentic...

( edit )
The second group of scans is a little better.

Is it really safe to send off for grading? How much would it cost, where do I send it, and whats the best way to ship?

As valuable as a 1909-S VDB is, that coin is mere pocket change compared to some of the coins sent to Third Party Graders(TPGs). Many collectors would never purchase a raw coin worth $1000 or more, myself included, there are just too many counterfeits of this date floating around. With bigger pictures, authenticity can be reasonably determined since only four dies were used to mint the entire mintage of 484,000- each die had a specific position of the mint mark in relation to the date. However, guaranteed authenticity can only be determined by someone examining the coin in hand, it cannot be definitely done through a photograph.

From those scans the VF grade seems accurate. This coin could go choice VF but we'd have to see it more clearly to know.

If genuine, this is a $1,200 coin. I'd consider sending it to a top TPG.

The "S" concerns me a bit. Can anyone else see that? The placement seems odd.

It would be worth the $25 to have a TPG authenticate this potentially valuable coin
I agree with Bherring that the 2X2 grade of VF is accurate: VF-30 IHMO

I recommend PCGS, NCG or ANACS for TPG (in that order)
