My parents were born in the late twenties and I was born in 1949. In the sixties they were both casual collectors. They both collected depression glass and mid-century glass. My Mom collected coins and Avon and my Dad collected old radios, cameras and watches. I inherited the collecting curse from both of them. In the sixties and seventies I collected vinyl albums which I still have. In 2015 I added to them by starting a new vinyl collection. In the eighties I started collecting guns and in the early 2000s I started collecting guitars and various guitar accessories. A few years ago I started collecting silver coins and that's where I'm at today.

As a millenial (33) who is getting into coin collecting I just have to say that the reasons why coin collecting is shrinking relative to other collecting hobbies (such as sports cards) has a lot to do with the attitudes portrayed here.
I have noticed that many of the older generation folks on this thread have come up with a laundry list of reasons why my generation is inferior or different, and very little reflection on why Boomers and Gen X didn't do a better job evolving the hobby to appeal to a more modern audience.
I have received a ton of helpful info from the older generation on this forum and am not trying to say that it's all your fault either though.
Ultimately though, it's hard for a hobby to be "cool" and appeal to younger generations when it is dominated, at the top, by folks 40 years older than us, who don't understand how to appeal to my generation or how to fully embrace technology.

It's that simple.

None of my kids have ever been interested in coin collecting. They are, however, very interested in inheriting my coin collection.

My son has shown interest in the "never ending" quarters. Complain about them all you want, but they do attract the kids' attention. He is also into elongated cents. Whenever he goes on a trip we make sure he has enough cents and spenders for the machines he finds. He has a nice collection of them now.

For the record, I like the all the modern quarter runs and have collected them all. I think I like the Women series best because it is a short run and the entire P/D/S/S set will fit in one Dansco album.

It's that simple. Yep! I was looking to see if anyone has mentioned this. that is exactly what it is. too much time on electronics and not enough outside time and real hobbies.

We have a few friends where their children are interested in playing sports AND their cell phones. That seems to be about it. Such a shame! We always give Graduates an ASE for the year they graduate. Usually we get an "oh, ok, thanks". We even tell them a little bit about the coins but, still don't see an interest or sadly, an understanding. They seems to know nothing about coins or tangible money - even spenders. We keep giving them though in hopes that some day they may care. Maybe they won't be collectors but, they do hear a little lesson that might stick with them.
