I am not so sure about the tech being an issue...

Back in the '80s, I spent a lot of time in the basement with my Commodore computers... and that includes running a BBS

So...you just provided more evidence it is a tech issue?

However, the issue is not "tech" in general, the issue seems to be too much "screen time", which includes computer monitors, tablets, mobiles, and TV.
In fact, short-sightedness in increasing rapidly, especially in kids.

How? Are you saying I am not a dedicated coin collector?

At least the screens have gotten better. I still have a pair of old CRT monitors attached to the still functioning Commodore computers.

My first computer was a ZX Spectrum. Connected to a small grey-scale CRT TV.

That is precisely what I meant when saying tech.

I guess I should've said technology, I was trying to be short and all inclusive.

Screen time, phones, tablets, computers, anything digital with screens is what I meant.

The premise seems to be that "boomers" collected because there was less screen time? I distinctly remember a lot of teeth-gnashing over kids spending an average of 4 hours a day watching TV. So it's really nothing new. And it goes both ways - if you're into coin collecting, there are a lot more ways to look at and learn about coins now than there were "back then", when you had to wait for a monthly magazine or physically go to a coin shop.

Sweet! My first computer (owned) was a Sinclair ZX-81 hooked to a small B&W TV. Got it from the UK for £99 (about US$150) in 1981. The first computer I touched was an Apple ][ in grade 7. Needless to say, the ZX-81 was a bargain compared to it.

But I digress...

Tech(nology) has always been there, both helping and hindering our hobbies. To justify the former with today's tech, just look at how many YNs we have here at CCF

I'm a boomer (born 1956). My children and grandchildren all collect something, just not coins, yet.

Lately some of my grandchildren are seriously collecting original beanie babies. Another collects rocks. My daughter likes old sewing machines and my son likes old knives. I keep giving the grandchildren old coins now and then just to see if any of them show an interest.

I think there will still be some coin collectors among the younger generations because people like old things and history and surely some of them will gravitate towards coins. I think one of the problems is there are just too many other things out there to collect.

We just got a severe thunderstorm warning with "half dollar size hail." I wonder if that size comparison means anything to most people today.

Phil- You should offer them colorized coins, that might help get them interested.

Like a colorized Hulk coin or an animal.

Whatever they are into I'm sure there's a colorized silver bullion coin.

As a Boomer, we only had 3 TV channels and no cable - ABC, NBC & CBS. Our family enjoyed Sunday nights together with Walt Disney and Bonanza. It was nothing like we have today! Just sayin'!

You didn't also get PBS or whatever the public TV iteration was back then? My grandfather was a TV and radio repair man. We had a used TV in every room in the house, like 7 or 8 of them, B&W with vacuum tubes.

kbbpll: No PBS that I remember. We read a LOT of real books. I would read my Mom's Red Books, cover to cover. We only had 1 TV and until 1968 it was B&W too.

I wanted to also mention that we didn't have cell phones. The phones that we did have cost us for long distance.

This sure makes me sound antiquated! Nope, I have bigger "toys" now.
