1979 D Jefferson Nickel With Swirl On Obverse

I've started searching coins and found this 1979 D Nickel with a large "swirl" that seems to be coming out of President Jefferson's ear area. Would this be an error? Thank you very much for any help. ijn1944 Bedrock of the Community United States 19131 Posts	Posted 12/31/2022 4:55 pm Post-strike damage. Most likely caused by repeated use in a vending machine (think Nickelcade). We see this often. I have a few nickels with a smaller circle on the reverse in the center so I thought those must not be rare but this looked different. Oh well...I guess I'll have to keep on working.
