Hi! This is my first post so please let me know if I'm doing anything wrong.

I've started searching coins and found this 1979 D Nickel with a large "swirl" that seems to be coming out of President Jefferson's ear area. Would this be an error?

Thank you very much for any help.

No doubt PMD, but a sharper pic would help.

Post-strike damage. Most likely caused by repeated use in a vending machine (think Nickelcade). We see this often. Full, large and sharp pics of the obverse and reverse would certainly help us. Thanks.

Thank you, @coinfrog! It has taken this embarrassingly long amount of time to "shrink" my other pictures. Lol. I've now uploaded them, but I can't find them. Baby steps...

Oh my goodness! I love this forum! I'm sitting here trying to figure out how to move the new pictures into my post and the staff already moved them for me!

Thank you so much!

P.S. I wanted to put the "Thank you" in caps but - even though it probably doesn't show - I actually did read all the rules. You're awesome!

I thought I had uploaded the reverse but clearly I didn't. I will now. Thank you, everyone. I have a few nickels with a smaller circle on the reverse in the center so I thought those must not be rare but this looked different. Oh well...I guess I'll have to keep on working. It's against the rules to put a smiley face but if it were legal, there would be one here.

It is kind of weird how much the swirls look like the curls when you magnify a quarter. Oh well. Thank you for explaining it. Happy New Year!

Agree with post mint damage - as stated above likely vending machine use.

Just post mint damage.

In the future, please no screen shot photos. They are too pixelated to be of use.

Might have been a Coin Wrapping Machine, but as others have said, most likely a Gumball Machine or vending machine.
