Hi. This might sound odd but since looking at coins, I have such an appreciation for them. I find them beautiful, and some are somehow more striking than others (to me).

Does this nickel (wait for it) look like the face is a little more "chiseled" (for lack of a better word)? Does the eye look brighter, too?

Also, are the letters at the top on the reverse side considered Machine Doubling?

Again, thank you for your help.

a lack of doubling can make the devices sharper and more chiseled, so can a fresh die, one that has not yet struck many coins

Thank you, both! I can't wait until I figure out what the Menu items mean on my new, kind of cheap microscope.

My daughter is a digital artist and home for Christmas but when I showed her the first comments I got and explained my new obsession, she started watching me and said, "Mom! Every time you cut parts out of the picture, the quality goes down. Also, you're not a 'coin collector' - you have a hobby." Lol So...I don't like her right now and I'm not going to ask her for help.

Anyway, I hope these additional pictures are O.K.

Using a phone to take pictures of a picture of a coin, induces pixilation that can hamper a proper diagnosis of a coin. Please try to post up the actual images your scope produces, not screen shots.
Going back to your original image, I see a MAD strike for this coin.

nickels of that period were struck at a higher relief (a greater metal height difference between the empty fields and the tops of the imges/letters) than used now, so that could be part of why your 1985 nickel looks more chiseled to you

That makes sense, and it must have been what someone else meant by a screenshot. I think of that as something done with a software program. I appreciate the explanation.

Unfortunately, this microscope only uploads to Windows and all of our laptops, etc. are Macs. My phone; however, is a Samsung so I'll see if there's a way to connect them.

I appreciate everyone's help. I'm going to Google "MAD" now. :)

Looks like extreme die wear coming on this die as it ages. (this is always seen on the devices that face the rim direction as the die ages)
