Hi there!

I'm very new here, but I recently inherited a Flying Eagle cent from my grandfather and was hoping someone might be able to help me out.

The coin is not in great condition, but the eagle side of the coin has a number of arrows printed over it.

Is this an error or just wear from over 150 years of use?

Thanks for your help!

Not an error, and not just wear - this has been severely damaged.

Hi Harry and to the Forum! Unfortunately your image is a bit small to make a definitive determination, but it appears that this is post-mint damage. Notice how the corresponding areas on the reverse are also flattened somewhat.

@har, first welcome to CCF. Second, for sure your cent has some significant damage. I was wondering if perhaps there was a was a Cud on the obverse rim at about four o'clock. I'm not seeing one listed on the Cuds on coins website, so I guess that is most likely damage as well. Anyways, here is a link to the relevant page:

Thanks folks! Really appreciate it. This thing has definitely seen some use/abuse.

Do you know how the coin would have gotten the arrows above the tail of the eagle? Is it possible that it got pressed up on the arrows and wreath from an Indian Head penny to get the arrows indented?

I've attached a few more pictures in case its helpful

Ok yes those incuse arrows are all damage. Someone compressed this against another object and part of the pattern from that other object was transferred here.
