I am new here and apologize if this is in the wrong forum. I managed to find a John Adams Presidential dollar that does not have the gold looking plating on it and was wondering if it was a mint error. I have looked all over the internet and have not found anyone else that has also encountered the same. I'm sorry that I could not get a better picture. Pic - The one on the left is a James Monroe and the one on the right is the Silvered colored John Adams in question. It has none of the golden colored plating on either side. Just wanted to see if it was worth anymore then face value before I go and waste my time running around town looking for a coin shop and getting second opinions.

It might be silver platted or some kind of other metal. last week I found in a roll a 1974 silver platted half dollar and someone did a great job do it. Then it maybe a real error you never know.

Without a better pic, I would say it is plated. You may want to weigh it?

I got it out of a vending machine at work that accepts $20 dollar bills. It spits out 18 dollar coins and 2 dollars in quarters. This little guy was among them. I have no expertise when it comes to collecting coins. I do know that mint errors can be worth lots more then face value of the coin.
I saw where some errors include the printing on the side missing (In God We Trust..) due to missing that part of the pressing. Perhaps this guy somehow managed to miss getting colored?
Thank you all for the quick replies. Please keep them coming.

It's probably plated... or wrong metal... It's not a peeling off thing because the dollars is (Mg-Cu-Zn)-Pure CU-(Mg-Cu-Zn). None of these parts have white metal. These coins are not colored. Perhaps a better pic would help.

I strongly suspect that someone plated it since I can't think of any other planchets of both that color and size currently being used. I agree that the first step is to weigh it.

Weight.....would be telling. Home Shopping Network......Littleton.....Franklin Mint......etc etc. could have made this too. I believe they sell they "Platinum Plated" which would be this silver coloring. And there may be a "silver plated" Presidential dollar being sold too....not sure.....but I know they sell the Platinum one.....so It's possible it's one of those too. If so, there is little value to them........they've done testing in "parts per Billion" to find the amounts of Gold or Platinum on these types of coins.....and there's barely a trace amount detected. It then, just becomes an "altered U.S. Coin"...... But don't part with it until you know for sure what you have here !....

I won't say that your dollar is plated, but since there are many companies that sell dollars that way. The Presidential dollars are Copper, Manganese, and Zinc. Manganese in its purest form is a grey white metal, but it can oxidize rather quickly when exposed to air. Zinc in its purest form appears to be bluish gray. The way the metals are melted and fused together to make the dollar coins make it unlikely for Manganese or zinc to retain its original color.
