So a work associate knows I'm into coins brought in this Indian cent. I said it looks like MS but artificial toning blow torched or some crazy Sulphur reaction. She thinks my judgement is off.... so I said I know some folks with more opinions here......So what say you?
It's in a generic holder no grade.

Looks artificial to me as well.

As a collector, attractive artificial toning does not worry as much as it does for most collectors, for two reasons.
1. As a probable buyer, it may be possible to negotiate downwards, when deciding on a price.
2. Rainbow toning is delicate, and not stable over the long term. Expect the coin to continue to tone, and in the long term, it may end up looking as if had acquired a normal toned color.

Nevertheless, anyone who has tried to artificially tone a coin has wasted his time.

It is artificial 100%.

Rather than use the term artificial, I choose to say that the environment in which the coin was exposed was manipulated by someone with the intent to accelerate the toning process--yes, deliberately induced. Likely what's happened in this case. Copper is highly reactive--can tone slowly over many, many decades, or almost overnight.
Rest in Peace

Thanks for the opinions! Showed her, she seems more convinced that multiple folks agree what I told her from the get go.

Ask the owner of the coin what environment was the coin stored in to get rainbow rims? If the coin was sent to a TPG for grading, it would come back AT details.

I'm inclined to agree that this coin has bees doctored. There are a few, subdued spots on this coin that suggest same to me; notably, by the "I" in united . This blending could be the consequence of chemical cleaning.

Still, the details are remarkably sharp. The thought occurs to me that this coin may perhaps have once resided in the confines of an encased holder. The Pan-Am Expo was held in 1901. How does the coin's rim look ..... any abrasions apparent?
