Has anyone heard of some sort of error where a JFK half is all copper, no clad? I found one of these in a box today and was wondering if someone plated it, or removed the outer layers somehow, or whether this could be a legitimate mint error.

Before everyone post the little sign asking for pics, I will get you some as soon as I get some batteries for my camera.

PS I don't have a scale good enough for a weight.

You really need to get an accurate weight, a coin missing both clad layers will be significantly underweight.

Well, I don't know about absolute weight, but I could rig something up to compare weights of this coin and a standard half. Will let you know the results of that.

is it actually a copper color or is it just really dark? I have found a few JFK halves when metal detecting and they come out of the ground dark and will not clean up at all.

I think someone heated it up and it turned that bronze color. The steel shell was tempered by the heat.

I've seen a couple JFK halves like this. I think its just really dark toning, either natural or unatural.

But then again, I know nothing about the cladding process.

I certainly have seen dark toning, but that is usually a black or dark grey instead of a brown. I think the details are too good for it to be a cladding error personally.

Nod;
Does your coin have a "normal" edge, meaning copper/silver color? I have one that the entire copper core is exposed, with the obverse and reverse looking normal except for a dull color. All the reeding is there as well. The weight is 11.04 grams, where a normal clad half should weigh 11.34.
I don't know the tolerance between normal and abnormal is. Any help?
Thanks All.

Reeding is there, there is no silver color on the edge
