Folks, I am not all that familiar with this type yet, so, once again, I'm asking for help in grading this 1843 Seated Liberty dime.
I've posted the sellers pictures because my old scanner is about to go belly-up. No doubt these photos will be better than what I could post on my own anyway.
The coin appears to have nice detail left on it; however, I don't have it in hand, so I can't tell you anymore about it than what the pics show. If it were your coin, and it were going into your collection, what grade would you assign it? Thanks.

Ralph

EF-45 or AU-50, but I'm not convinced that the surfaces are original, especially on the reverse.

I'm assuming that the reverse is weakly struck, too. These often come lacking a lot of detail there.

Hi Ralph,

I'll go with VF-35. There is obvious wear on Liberty's legs, breast, and hand, and on the obverse stars and the reverse wreath. The overall level of wear rules out an EF grade IMO. The color looks OK. The reverse center is lighter but I don't see that as a problem.

Liberty's head looks odd. The groove running down the back of her head is supposed to be there, but it looks deeper than usual and there is a blob of metal at the end of it that resembles a misplaced ear. I wonder if this area was damaged or re-engraved and I recommend you inspect it carefully. The 1843 is a common date and if this one turns out to be damaged it shouldn't be too hard to find a replacement that is problem-free.

For comparison, here is my 1860-S Seated dime. Note that there is no head groove but I think they changed the design slightly after 1855. I think my coin is possibly undergraded at PCGS VF-30.

Jaobler, I would call yours WAY undergraded. I consistently see EF 40 coins in slabs that have more wear than that.

Now that I take another look at the OP's coin, I may have gone a little high at first, but I'd still go with at least EF-40 based on what I've seen.

Jaobler - Without having it in hand, I can't say for sure, but I believe the glob you referred to is the ribbon at the back of the hair. The deepness of the groove looks, to me, like it may be a result of the lighting when photographed. The hair directly in front appears light due to wear, and I believe that makes the groove look deeper. I'll be able to tell more about it when it arrives.

Great shot at EF40 with VF35 likely from the big guys.
