Greetings all,

I am new here and would like to share an ancient coin that is in my possession since 2019.

Greek Silver Tetradrachm of Tenedos

Online info:
"Mysia Islands off Troas, Tenedos. Circa 100-70 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 16.27 g 12). Janiform head composed of a laureate and bearded head of Zeus to left and a diademed head of Hera to right. Rev. TENEDIWN Double axe."

I have only washed this coin thoroughly with water so the coin still carries some smooth appearance of the earth in which it was found. I love the ancient look it instantly gives. The union of the heads and the carvings look flawless. Notice the full cheeks they both have.

At first I did not know that this was a silver coin. Could this still be cleaned to appear silver again?

The coin measurements are 3cm x 3cm with a nice thickness and weight to it. I am yet to weigh this coin.

If you have further information or questions about the history of this coin, feel free to share or ask me. Also just for my knowledge, what would be the estimate £ or $ value of this coin?

Thank you.

Silver tetradrachms of Tenedos should weigh 16.5 (+- 0.3) grams.

Go to acsearch.info, an ancient coins database of auctions. Type in Tenedos in the search line, scroll down looking that the coins and read the descriptions. There's a few examples of your coin. On the reverse, under the double axe to left is a reversed TE symbol, grapes. On right side is standing Artemis. It's a rather rare variety. Search the sold auctions online for value.

Sometimes silver coins do turn dark, depending on the soil conditions they were in when found. A lot of ancient coins are found with dirt, encrustation, etc. and are carefully cleaned to reveal the details. The original patina on the surface is not destroyed. But you need to learn how to clean them or you could hurt the value. I would NOT clean your coin to look shine new. It could ruin the patina that formed over the centuries. Leave it as is. That's my opinion.

Your coin does not look like a modern fake to me but it might be. You could take it to a coin store or maybe jewelry store that has a XRF metal analyzer. It would show it's true metal composition. Possibly it's a very rare large bronze variety but I'm just speculating because bronze coins from Tenedos are small, like 14mm or less. You could send it in for authenticity to David Sear or NGC.

@boss, first welcome to CCF. Second, knowing the weight would be important as mention above. Can you also please take a photo of the edge of this coin for us? It doesn't look cast to me, but it would be nice to rule that out.

@livingwater, thank you so much for your feedback, it is much appreciated. Your description of this coin has helped me to see and understand it better. The standing Artemis on the reversed side is great to know! I just browsed further on this and noted that there are only two known types with the standing Artemis for this coin. Is that true? I am fascinated by Greek Mythology and when I came across this coin, I never doubted it much and kept it ever since. However, being here has also been a wakeup call for possible fake ancient coins.

I agree with you that I should not get it cleaned to shine new. I like it as it is.

@Sel_69l and @Spence, thank you for the welcome message.

Yes, let me share more photos, including the edge for you to look at. Let me know what you think. I will get it weighed asap and get it analyzed as well to confirm its authenticity.

There are a few more examples than what CNG said in their auction at that time because there are more on acsearch.info. It's still a rare variety.

The second batch of pics show some of the patina has rubbed off on the reverse wreath, on the grapes and a bit on the axe head which looks like silver underneath. That's good! There are a lot of Athens silver tetradrachms that have been carefully cleaned to look new. But I'd keep yours as is if it was mine.

When fake coins are cast, sometimes the edge will show a seam where the two halves were put together for pouring of the metal. Then files are used to try and hide the seam. I don't see an obvious seam. Weighing it would help confirm as stated by sel_69I.
