Gday all, I'm attending to my late fathers estate and came across this 1846 Seated Liberty dollar. Not sure on what grade it would be, so just asking here to see if anyone could give me a bit more info on it.

Can you give a straight-on close up photo? Hard to see much at that angle

The soft overall appearance and the bubbles on the stars look like casting. How much does it weigh?

All features of this coin point to the fact that it is a modern Chinese counterfeit.

Here are some more pictures of the coin. Hoping it isn't a counterfeit, but these days you never know, that's why this site is invaluable, thanks in advance for all your comments and suggestions .

The weight is 17 grams I've checked that the normal weight should be 26.73 grams. So definitely a fake #128553; Thank you all for your input &

Yep, I suspected same. Weight is often times the most telling factor for collectors having a less educated eye for diagnostics.

Wow, they even fake the wear and tear? That's, well, I don't know what to say. Is this something that you would need to be aware of, even when buying from your LCS?

The date logo is comical, always a giveaway on these counterfeits.

Quote: Is this something that you would need to be aware of, even when buying from your LCS? Not likely, BUT I've seen an occasional fake in dealers' cases over the years. Local auctions and flea markets are where these fakes mostly appear. These typically show XF detail, but some, like the OP's piece, have been artificially aged in a tumbler. They typically exhibit a rather dull, gray coloration, too. The deciding factor for skeptical folks whom I've confronted has been the low weight differential.
