This one brought mixed opinions on FB groups, and I am new so I do not know. I am hoping a more accurate opinion can be found in a dedicated forum.

My initial thought, not even knowing of the error was it was an attempt to make a button or something.

Looks like PMD to me. The dies are flat so no matter what, that's not what it looked like when it came out of the collar. Based on the ring on the obverse outside the convex part I'd speculate that it was put over some kind of a large washer with a hole slightly smaller than the penny and hit with a smaller steel cylinder on the reverse. Possibly using a sledge hammer but I feel more likely using something plugged in to provide enough force to do that much damage to it. That's all just a guess though. :)

I agree,, not a Die Cap error, it has been intentionally done after
the cent left the mint. No value but keep it as a curiosity or conversation piece.

There is a Canadian dime that is confirmed as a die cap error, it too is not flat. But it is not exactly alike either, it is much smoother.

You are more than likely correct. That was my first thought when I first opened the roll.

Confirmed by whom?

Both of those coins are damaged. Mike and I had a CCF member make a few for us, for fun, using a hydraulic press.

Fair point, the internet I guess, lol

My first thought was button, then, yeah right, I would find this in my first days of collecting, lol

It was the comments from a FB group that made me look deeper. Just to be sure. Figured you lot were better to know that FB, haha

Thanks for the answers gang.

You came to the right place. Several experienced error collectors are here, and always available to help.

I am enjoying the posts here, and really appreciate the help everyone gives ( FB can sometimes be a post minefield, lol ) Seeing how much I have to learn. every error I find seems to lead down its own rabbit hole.
I really need to get organized, hopefully next week with a proper scope and pictures when I find something interesting again.

I have hundreds of pennies, getting $50 in rolls next week. I am sitting on a few untapped resources. To think this all started as a Mosaic home reno project......
