I came upon this auction for a 1955 silver penny on ebay. I was wondering if it was struck on a dime planchet, or if it was plated with something. I have included the link below. Thanks in advance.

My thought is a plated cent not struck on a dime planchet. A dime weighs 2.5 grams if silver +/- .09 grams mint tolerance.

It appears that someone has acquired a nice silver-plated LWC. Hope it works out well for them.

Could it be struck on a foreign planchet? But if it is plated, do you know what it could be plated in?

Could it also be plated in mercury or zinc?

It could be a foreign planchet, would need to check mint records. As to what it is plated with, hard to say without testing it.

The bidding history on that "silver penny" is quite suspicious. 2 bidders, 3 bids. Started at $25, then $100, then finally $125. Quite curious.

A friend has one for sale, he says its silver, but I believe its plated, if plated any idea of value? I forget what he was asking for it.

It's worth 1¢, except possibly to some fools on the bay.
